As we were moving the kitchen to the other end of the house and building a snug eating area into it (as well as the fact that we don’t tend to have eight people or more around for formal dinner parties every week) we didn’t really need a dining room.

We’ve not quite decided what to call the room now though. It’s not a front room as it’s at the back of the house, it’s not the lounge as that would be confusing as we call our actual lounge a lounge, and I’m far too Northern to have anything as posh sounding as a morning room. So it’s ‘that room over there’ or ‘ the OTHER lounge’ for now. My rather rubbish iPhone camera shots next to the fancy estate agent shot below make it look as though we’ve made a light bright room quite dark. Believe me, with the dark red paint, it was a really gloomy miserable looking room before. Mum and I got set to painting it the week we moved in and it’s blue grey but actually looks green most of the time.

Other than the paint, we’ve not really done much too it and we think it may still be the only room with the original floor in place. However under the floor are some rotting joists. Not good but we’ll get them sorted when we’ve the lounge (the actual lounge as opposed the the ‘other lounge’ which is this room) properly finished.

The saddest part was that we can’t easily reopen the old fireplace that had been plastered over. The flue had been used for the room next door which we decided to keep and the cost of getting a new flue just didn’t make sense to do right now. It does need a cosy fire so maybe one day…

The estate agent brochure shot. Don't be fooled by how light and bright it looked. It was seriously dark and dreary!

The same view now. Taken as a panoramic shot with an unsteady hand so it's the photo that's wonky not the room.
